Dry Falls yesterday (4/28)

My brother is in town this week and those cool little strike indicators from Waters West I got were burning a hole in my vest, so I made the trek to Dry Falls yesterday. When we got there the wind was blowing pretty good, but it was relatively warm and there were only three other cars in the parking lot. :thumb

The chironomids are still going strong. It was my brother's first time chironomid fishing, so he had a tough time in the morning, but he had it figured out by early afternoon and ended up with a dozen or so. I lost count, but it was another great day. The fly de'jour was a #14 olive snowcone. There were a couple of guys across from us who were also picking them pretty regularly using a black and red chironomid pattern.

I talked to a guy later in the day who said they had picked up a few on damsel nymphs and I did see a few swimming around here and there, so it looks like the hatch should be starting soon.

On a final note - those indicators are the best thing since sliced bread! They worked flawlessly and solved my biggest problem with chironomid fishing. Thanks to all those who let the board know about them. That is one of the things that make this forum great.

Hey Scott...so when you gonna make the trek over here and show me up on my own side of the state }(.

I just got my new indicators on friday so im excited to try them out. I also ordered a chironomid/split shot/20 feet of leader with strike indicator casting instructor. They were back orderd though so I have to wait until June 22nd before he will arrive ;) ;) .

A chromid(sp) with a white bead for a head. Boy I can't even spell Chronomid(sp) right. I must be spelling challanged.

A snowcone is the most boring pattern in the world to tie, and yet one of the most effective...figures.

Head: White enamel bead
Thread: Whatever color you want (black, olive, brown etc.)
Rib: fine silver wire
Body: Thread, tapered to bead

That's it. I usually coat the body with a thin coat of Softbody, just to make them last longer.

Pat, I've been thinking about heading over your way sometime this year - maybe in the fall. You have much better moving water choices than I do, and that's really my first love...

Just to clarify, is the shank typically a straight shank or curved shank?? I seem to remember you had both but the ones you gave me were straight shanked on the snowcones?? thats probably why I couldnt cast ;-)

I'm glad someone finally confirmed my suspicions on that one. The owner of Spirit Pond Sports in Sicamous, BC showed me that fly a few years ago and was calling it an Ice Cream Cone. Why do Canadians always have to be different?

Those are the indicators. They are worth every penny.

Pat, I use a Tiemco 200R (actually Dai-Riki's equivalent), which gives the fly a little bit of a bend, you might want to try a scud hook, I hear they are easier to cast. :P

Do these strike indicators really release from the line after a stike?? At .50 a fish that could get really expensive on a windy day. Have you fished these indicators much?

Your line actually runs through the middle of them so you dont actually loose them every time you get a fish on....boy that would suck wouldnt it...

I called the guy at Water's West ( a very friendly and informed man) to ask about how the bobbers should be rigged. He wanted to know the name of the dude who started this whole feeding frenzy on the .50 cents strike indicators. I told him I didn't remember but I'd make a post to find out. Whoever it is should hit Water's
West up for a dozen flies or a free spey rod or something. He's been doing a land office business. I mean the orders have just been pouring in like the Missouri.
