Chironomid Tying

As I've looked through the Chironomid Swap gallery, I've noticed that a significant number of the bugs have a white wing over the eyelet.

Is this to hide the knot and eyelet or is there some other reason for it? Since we're fishing subsurface, it wouldn't be needed as an indicator, but it does look cool!

Gills. Normally a white antron material. I use while peacock hurl.

I use it to hide my substandard whip finishes.

Take a trip to Pass lake. Watch the water and you'll usually spot chironomids. Look at a live one pre-hatch. You'll see distinctive white at the top. Some you will also see towards the bottom.
