As I've looked through the Chironomid Swap gallery, I've noticed that a significant number of the bugs have a white wing over the eyelet.

Is this to hide the knot and eyelet or is there some other reason for it? Since we're fishing subsurface, it wouldn't be needed as an indicator, but it does look cool!

Just Curious!:dunno

PS - the more I look at the bugs the more excited I get about fishing them!! :thumb

I use it to hide my substandard whip finishes.

Take a trip to Pass lake. Watch the water and you'll usually spot chironomids. Look at a live one pre-hatch. You'll see distinctive white at the top. Some you will also see towards the bottom.

Thanks guys! I especially like your idea Gotchaser. I'll keep my eyes open next time I hit the lake with the new bugs from the swap.

THE WHITE WING IS ACTUALLY THE GILLS OF THE CHIRONIMID. I LIKE TO USE WHITE OSTRICH HURL, POLY YARN OR EVEN A WHITE BEAD:smokin
