Blackbird is a "subspecies" of the Redwing fly pattern series. The body feathers fluff up in the water and "breathe" in the current as if alive, even more than marabou.
This pattern works well when you can see the fish or have a known lie, and can pass the fly to their outside, 2 to 4 feet from the steelhead. Make the fish move for the fly.
This is a must have in my box.
This is not in any books that have included my patterns that I'm aware of.
Hook size- 6-10 double
tag is fine oval silver tinsel
tail- GP crest
body- rear half is florescent orange floss ribbed with fine oval silver tinsel
front half is 6-8 reddish orange hen neck hackles tied around the hook,
usually 2 at a time, followed by 8 or 10 black hen neck hackles
wing- GP tippet extending to butt followed by 6 topppings, JC for cheeks
