What knot do you use on the hook when fishing a tube fly? Thanks.

Mr.P:

A good old improved clinch never fails me on the tubes.

I use the same knot that I use when I am not fishing tubes: the worlds fair knot. Works great for me and takes three seconds to tie but I have never seen anyone else use it, nor have I ever seen it published. I'm sure there is some terrible reason why that I'll find out some day but for now...

I learned to tie one knot from my grandfather 30 years ago and I have been using that same knot for everything. He primarily just fished small dries and with the larger diameter leaders of the time, he wanted as small a knot as possible.

I never knew the name, but to respond to this post I did some digging and I am pretty sure it called the "Centari Knot" (it was the '70's afterall).

You can tie it in about 4 seconds, and it is easy to tie in the near-dark. This is a particulary good knot for tube flies as it is a small strong knot that I think helps the hook ride correctly in the back of the tube, plus it does not seem to get abraided by the tube. I've really only been fishing tube flies for about a year, but I haven't lost a fish on a tube because of knot failure.

I was inspired by Benn to actually research the world's fair knot. Here it is:

No-slip mono loop is my favorite particulalry with a jucntion tube as the tube protects the knot but allows the hook to dangle behind the tube which I think helps the fly swim true. The Turl Knot is handy if you're using an up-eye hook like a Gamakatsu Octopus, as it leaves a straight run of mono going from the eye to the tube and so keeping the hook from angling upward at the back of the fly.

My preferred terminal knot is the Eugene Bend or Pitzen for a number of reasons. Firstly, it is easy to tie and can be tied with a pair of hemostats when your hands are cold or wet or the material is really fine. Secondly, it tells you visually, tactily, and audibly if it is tied and tightened correctly. Finally, it is a 100% breaking strength knot.

You can find info on how to tie it using hemostats at
