I've been tying up some pacific salmon patterns using coneheads for weight but am running into a problem finishing off my fly snug against the cone head. I've been tying a lot of patterns with marabou and I either end up with a gap between my finished marabou and the conehead, or I have to push the cone head back over the marabou. Either way it falls short of the flies I see in the store. Any suggestions?

Once you put the cone on the hook, wrap a few turns of lead and push it into the open end of the cone. This will keep the cone from rattling around and will increase the diameter at the open end of the cone. Wrap the body material or hackle right up to the cone. A couple of extra wraps won't hurt.
