Date, time, tide action, fish caught, fly used, weather, location, and a misc comment area....anything else pertinent to keep record of?

moon phase; wind direction and speed. At least on the salt I notice that a full moon on a clear sky at night allows fish to eat all night and negate everything else, at least for a morning outing.
Might also note water depth if you're on a boat.

water and air temperatures, wind effect on tides too. Light conditions; ie low visibility or clear and sunny etc. Water clarity can be an issue too. Dont forget to record lunch quality, quantity and best local coffee, pizza and restrooms/showers.

In my journal, I have noted the beach location, time and height of the high and the time and height of the low, what time I fished it and for how long. I also note the weather conditions and of course, what I caught and, most importantly, what I didn't catch. I also add things like: what color popper I used; wether or not I saw any bait; did anyone else catch fish and on what; did I see any fish rolling, feeding, slashing, or happy jumping?
One thing you might do to keep your journal from simply becoming a list of facts is to write it down in the form of a short essay. It's a lot more fun to read later.

Might as well interrogate each fish, ask them why they chose to act as they did while threatening to trim their fins with a pair of rusty scissors...
The plan isnt to count the catch and hang a written record on the wall, but rather to help me out next year when I cant remember what worked when and maybe why.
However, every ten years I could highlight all the fish caught in bright yellow, add em up, and record that on the journal face in big, red gothic numbers prior to framing on the wall! :)

TY Leland, sounds like excellant facts to record...and your right, it feels sterile doing it in colums and numbers, I like words alot better!
