OK. So here's the question. I tie a lot of flies on curved shank hooks, and find that it doesn't really make using rotary function the easiest, being that there is no "flat" spot to align on the axis of rotation. What do ya'll do? I am still learning rotary tricks and techniques, and since I tie the majority of my nymphs on curved shank hooks, i was just interested in what you do. Thanks - Trevor

When I'm tying on a curved shank hook I usually keep the vise in the same position and rotate only to inspect the fly when I'm about done. That's the great thing about the rotary; you have it there if you can/need to use it, but it's just like a regular vise when you need it to be.

When beginning the wraps at the bend of the hook, rotate the vise with the left hand while the right hand keeps the thread and tying materials 90 degrees to the hook shank while winging forward. You may have to move the thread back and forth in the area of the hook point as you are rotating the vise so you dont catch and break the thread on the point of the hook.

I just rote the eye of the hook down a little. Attch my thread, and check the axis by putting my bobbin in the cradle.
I tye alot of flies on scud hooks and that works for me and my Renzetti Master.
Hope this helps.

One of the unadvertised benefits of the rotary vise is the way you can tie with curved-shank hooks. I had always had a problem with the thread slipping down the shank, following the bend in the hook...but with the rotary vise, I mount the hook then rotate the hook 90 degrees so that the shank is in one horizontal plane. No, I don't "tie rotary" using these hooks, but the 90 degree twist sure makes dealing with those hooks easier....for me anyway.
