Does anyone know of a good source for spey materials over the internet? My local shop does not stock a large selection of the spey materials. I have recently really gotten into traditional spey styles of flies. Heron, golden pheasant, and the such. If anyone knows this would be great.

It is illegal to sell or even posess heron feathers in this county, but there are several possible sources for much of the other material you seek.

Speybum of "River Run Anglers" is a site sponsor and has a great selection.

Also, Google the "Irish Angler". Jack Cook the proprietor has lots of spey materials and an easy to navigate catalog.

John Shewey has some of the finest natural and dyed feathers for spey and dee flies. He can be reached at shewey@matchthehatch.com and will email you his catalog.

Rich Youngers owner of Creekside Flyfishing also stocks extensive inventory for tying spey and dee flies and can be reached at www.creeksideflyfishing.com and 503-588-1768.

Both are also extremely well versed in the art of tying these flies and are always willing to share their skills and knowledge.

Gordon,

Thanks for reminding me of Waters West. I go to the Bellevue FF show each year just to go to their booth and purchase spey fly tying materials. They do great dyeing and have quality materials.

Waters west (great full skins)
Jack Cook (irish angler) (425)922-5413

Castle arms (internet)

There are a few different places I find good hackle. I usually try and contact individual farmers like whitman farms and the like to find the hackle.

I generally use Castle arms to purchase my mallard and teal in bulk. They also have a good amount of golden pheasant tail clump feathers as well as peacock secondary feathers.

Waters west has some great blue eared pheasant skins (nice 3-5 year old skins) also has good jungle cock skins

Irish angler has a great selection of dyed cock feathers as well as all the floss one could use in a lifetime. He also has a good selection of tying thread and tinsels.

as a data point, i used to frequent dave mcneese's shop in salem, or. dave was, in my estimation, one of the rare individuals who userstood the ins and outs of dying materials whether fur or feathers.

dave at water's west is right up there with the mcneese of old. the very first time i stopped in his shop in PA i was takenaback by the vibrant colors he achieves. you can't go wrong with materials from this dave, they are excellent, excellent, excellent!!!!!

Humble ~thank you very much~ for the compliment! I sure miss those days of having all of you wonderful friends/customers in my shop.

Just want to let you know that if you can't find what you want, I am available again for custom dying or whatnot. I am gearing up to have some wonderful materials available in the future, as we are raising our own birds now. I still dye, tie, and make rods and reels to order. Lisa says I still love to talk too, so come on by my workshop/hobby farm! :beer2:
I am currently planning steelhead fly-tying classes to be held here, so any special requests can still be considered. Your thoughts and input would be great!

sincerely,
Dave

Puget Sound Fly Co. has started an on line service and they are sponsors of this forum. They carry a nice selection of spey materials and have always been very helpful when I needed advice or ideas. Click on their banner ad and check them out.

Dave

I have called about the hooks recently, and they were very apologetic, as they are not quite done, ARGH. It has taken two years to get to this point, but they will be great. If someone has 150k to give them I'm sure they would work alot faster.

Yes, currently working on creating a website. I have ideas, but not sure what to do next. It's kinda tough for someone who has NO idea how to begin even. Anyone have any suggestions?

Dyed materials, I can do as much of that as needed. Just let me know what you want and I'll drag out the pots of dye. I have always enjoyed creating the colors. Now I have alot of my own birds, so I can do some neat things.

Anyone want feathers, rods or reels let me know, hooks will be a couple more months. Website should come together soon too.

Cheers!
