Olive Willy

I promised to post some pics of the Olive Willy - here they are. The Olive Willy is a pattern created by William Servey years ago. There's two patterns in the 'series' - the Olive Willy and Drunk Dragon.

The OW has two styles - I've attached photos of both. The difference is the wing of red rabbit at the collar. The fly in the pic with the rabbit is tied by William. The other was tied by my son Jake.

Taxon and Kent wrote up the recipe and instructions so well, that I've just included their notes:

Materials:
Hook: Tiemco 5263BL #12
Bead: Translucent red
Thread: Black
Tail: Fl. Olive Pheasant rump feather (William uses Fl. Yellow)
Body: Dark olive chenille
Hackle: Fl. Olive Pheasant rump feather ((William uses Fl. Yellow)

Tying steps:
1) Debarb hook
2) Slide bead to eye
3) Attach tying tread and wrap to bend
4) Cut a pinch of the webby hackle at base of feather and tie in as tail (The tail is not marabou but the aftershaft feathers from the rump)
5) Attach chenille and wrap to slightly behind eye, leaving room for hackle
6) Attach hackle by tip, fold barbules back, and take two wraps while
stroking barbules rearward.
8.)optional - Wrap in the rabbit wing
7) Tie off, whip finish, and apply head cement (behind bead)

Thanks for postring the photos Kristin - the Olive Willy is one of the most successful stillwater flies in Western Washington.

If you supply enough Bud Light, William himself would probably teach you how to tie just about anything! :)

Yes Rick, if you come by we'd show you how to tie the flies. Hmm...might be a good demo for the upcoming Open Tyers Table, however - I have to agree with Hywel -- learning these patterns from William is really an..experience.. not to be missed!!:thumb:

The drunken Dragon is not a fly that you can see in a picture and then go and tie it up. It is done in a whole different way. I've did a few of them and to me it wasn't too easy.

Pram-man: I'm not sure if you'll be able to find instuctions on the Drunk Dragon pattern - as Jim noted, its a really unusual tie, I think its one you just have to see it done in person.

Like what has been said. It is the back part of the body that is different. It isn't built up like you usually build up fly bodies. It is wrapped on differently and I don't think that I could explain it. This is one fly that you have to see being tied to do it yourself.

It appears Kristin isn’t going to do it, so I’ll provide a follow-up report for those who were unable to attend William Servey’s demonstration of tying his Olive Willy and Drunk Dragon patterns at All About The Fly on Saturday.

First off, William is an extremely interesting and knowledgable fellow. Secondly, Jim Swan was sure right when he said the only way to understand how William builds the flat body on his Drunk Dragon is to see him do it.

In any event, it was a real treat to hear William, and to watch him tie his patterns. Thank you, Kristin, for providing all of us with that opportunity.
