What material do you guys normally use for clousers?
Marabou?
Bucktail?
Others?
I have always used bucktail for mine, but had a suggestion to try marabou.
Just got me thinking.

Bucktail
Black Bears fur
Yak Tail for larger flies
Squirrel tail for small flies only
Craft Fur
kinky fiber
Bozo hair
xmas tree tinsel silver, gold and ice
polar flash of assorted colors
other flash material
Large lamp bead chain
lead eyes
I am sure there has been other materials but that all that comes to mind right now.

I typically use bucktail for larger flies (say size 6 and up). I more often use marabou for smaller flies. The marabou will collapse more than bucktail when wet, but the marabou is so enticing in the water. I use bucktail on a larger fly to provide a large profile without adding much weight. Of course I'll violate this trend if I don't have just the right color in the usual material. While it sometimes seems to my wife that I have more stock on hand than the local flyshops, there always seem to be different colors/shades that I don't have that would be just right.....

Last year I tied some up using the teased out yarn from the rug in my dorm room. It was a good color, but it started to stink after a while so I threw it out.

I just use bucktail most of the time. For the smaller flies i use finner bucktail. Some times I use marabou. And I usually add some crystal flash in dfferent colors somewhere.
If they are for cutts I try to get soem red in there.....either red floss for "gills" or red eyes on the dumbell.

I go through A LOT of clousers in season.
2 dozen lost a day is common, and I bring 1.5 dozen/client for a 4 hour trip.
I have tied a few, and I use no natural materials, as they are much too weak to stand up to the average beachbashing the intertidal flyfisher gives them.
I use fishhair (FisHair?), krystalflash and flashabou.
Everything else breaks after 4 fish/3 beachcasts, whichever comes first.
IMHO, and YMMV

For my saltwater salmon Clousers I like Fishair. It is durable and is available in a lot of colors, lengths and deniers. I've been using it since the mid-1980s and still like it even with all of the new materials available.

Polar bear is illegal for us in the states, unless you jump through a bunch of hoops(but i have a little) and I never thought to use it for clousers though. I'll have to try it out for my next smallmouth trip.

Anyone ever try calf tail for the smaller clousers?

Yep, I use peach/white colored calf tail hair for my smaller clouser and I think it works great. My largest ones are a mix of bucktail and artificial fibers...
