Hey all - I had the luck to find a demo model DynaKing Barracuda vise at the Denver Sportsmans Expo yesterday. I have been tying for 2 years on non-rotary and decided I couldn't pass up a chance to upgrade. It was definitely an impulse buy and when I got home I realized it is missing the bobbin hanger. How critical is it to have one? I read the recent thread on the Barracuda and it sounds like not everyone uses them? I could also use any info on learning to tie full rotary . . .any videos, books etc. that could be helpful for a newbie?
thanks
Rod

If you actually use the rotary feature to tie you will definitely want the bobbin cradle. Call Dyna-King at 800-396-2546. You will most likely have Ron Abbey's daughter answer the phone. Explain your situation and the need for the bobbin cradle. I am sure they will take care of you, might even not charge if the fly tying gods are smiling at the time:thumb:

I too just recently began using a rotary vise. The need for the bobin cradle is for wrapping hackle. For example, when tying an adams, tie in your hackle, tie a half-hitch, rest your bobin in the cradle (your thread should be in a straight line from the eye of the hook to the cradle), hold on to your hackle, then rotate the vise. When your wraps are complete, tie off the hackle and your done! It really makes it easy to place nice even wraps, plus you are able to see all angles of the fly as your wrapping, ensuring yourself that your hackles are at the angle you want them to be.

I use the bobbin hanger on my Barracuda. I use it for wrapping hackle, but mostly I use it just to hold the thread out of the way, where ever that may be, so as to make it easier to get the material where I want it. I put the thread in the hanger out of habbit I use it so often.
You've got a great vise there. You're gonna love it. I got a video with mine. I never watched it so I don't know what's on it, but it came with one straight from Dyna King. While you're on the phone with them, see if they can hook you up with one of those. If not, there's tons of videos out there that can help you out.

I also use the bobbin cradle as others have noted, but I usually just hang my flies ( bigger flies) that I just finished on the cradle as well. Just my .02

How far away from the eye of the hook do ya'll put the cradle?
It seems that when it is out of the way for tying, it means that I have to have way to much thread out when I start wrapping again. Then again, if the thread is right, it crowds my ability to tie around the hook... tips?

Herein lies the beauty of the Nor-bobbin... Pull it out, it pulls back in (overly simplified, yes) when you want it to.

Just call Dyna King and get the bobbin hanger from them. I've been using the Baracuda since the first year it was put on the market and use no other vise since then.

I agree the Nor-Vise automatic bobbin is great.
Another idea I've seen put in use is to make a bobbin holder similar to the Nor-Vise. It's a post you locate about 14 inches from the vise.
When you use a post like that the bobbin becomes something you have to have.
I find it works much better than the craddle.

When in use, I have my cradle close to the eye of the hook, maybe an inch.
