Has anyone tried tying with these hooks? Looks interesting to me for Emerger patterns.

Here's a link:

wow. That does look interesting. You would be restricted to those extended body flies for a dun imitation, but as you mentioned, as an emerger hook they might be golden. Tie the emergent body on top with the shuck and body still contained below the surface maybe? Is that close to what you were thinking?... I may have to think about this idea some...

That's exactly what I was thinking... I haven't seen these hooks out yet. supposably they are new from Japan. I read about them on another forum. But there are patterns on this website if you follow the links. I thought that they looked pretty cool so I'd share them. The web site that Referenced these likened them to Swedish dry fly hooks only the bend was different.
I haven't seen a bare hook up close to see the difference.

Randy,

I picked up some similar-looking flies at McCoy's in Stanley, ID a few years back.

Called an Area 51, they were extended body types but with the body tied at a 90º angle to the hook shank (a TMC 200R in a 14 or 16), a dry fly hackle tied normally behind the eye and a small parachute extending beyond the eye parallel to the shank.

The effect was that the extended body and the hackle sat in the film with the parachute poking up and the hook hanging down below the surface like the photo in your link, but straight down instead of at an angle.

They were a kick-ass lake pattern that I'd totally forgotten about until reading your post. I may still have one or two somewhere and would be happy to send one if you're interested.

I've seen a few patterns similar to the ones pictured, but with a normal dry fly hooks w/o the bend as Kent mentioned. I haven't tried it yet, but I think I may give it a shot.

After a bit of a closer look, the hooks appear to be of the same shape/bend as a jig hook with the 90 deg. kink at the head where the lead head would attach softened to about 75 deg.. May be worthwhile to check out if a very light wire model (like for the 1/100th oz. jigs) is available? I don't know if they are made any smaller than sz 10-12 though.

almost looks like a stinger hook for dries!

See the attached photos for a variation on this theme. These two flies were created by Fabrizio Gajardoni. A seriously talented fly tyer from Italy. Do yourself a favor and take some time to peruse his web site.
