It’s official then the Sculpin swap is on !
So far we have:
1. me
2. Trout990
3. Mr. Trout
4. Cascade Killer
5. Ringlee
6. Willie Bodger
Let’s shoot for ten people total. The Deadline will be March 15 that should give us plenty of time. You guys might want to post what you want to tie, unless you don’t mind duplicates. In case we do maybe we can mix up the colors or something like that. Some basic rules which I am sure everyone already knows. Toe tag your flies, send them in a container that I can send back easily to you. Don’t forget to send return postage with your return address. Any Questions? I know I am probably forgetting something so chime in if I did.

I would love to join the swap. I'll be tying a minor modification of a sculpin pattern (rabbit strip, dumbbell eyes, etc.) which Skip Morris described in Flyfishing and Flytying Journal. Searun cutties on the Cowlitz really loved it.

You realize Ringlee has already mailed his flies to me you would be missing one fly if you decide to Join. If everybody else is okay with it I am.

It sounds like everyone is going to tie some big ugly sculpins. So i have decided to do the opposite. Im gonna tie a little wounded sculpin. It one of those flies that you look at and think, "thats cant possibly catch anything." But then u try it and it works great. Im tank testing them and comparing them to the real action of a wounded sculpin. So i hope they work for you.

I was thinking about tying a skating skulpin, maybe next time. I tied some tonight...here's a photo. James wasnt that monster fly you were swinging on the peninsula a wool head? I'd love to have one of those!

I hate this swap. J/K Not only are my patterns a pain to tie because I am using three colors of wool, but then I just cut the crap out of my finger trimming some wool.:beathead: I'll be done in a few days I suspect. They are a little more conservative than I planned, just a nice sculpin with a bunny tail and body with some feather pectoral fins and a wool head. They'll fish.:thumb:

Will,
I donno if sculpins skate but whatever floats your Claka'.
Mine will be off on monday, hopefully they will hurt when they hit the back of your head. Maybe I will do them on tubes...maybe i will do them all outta cdc, or spun jungle cock, but probably will end up just using spun and clipped skunk ape.
Peace,
ANdy

Just finished mine, as of this moment!
Tomorrow I'll put the toe tags on 'em, and have them mailed Friday.
I'm looking forward to the variety, of sculpin flys, from this, save for myself, accomplished group of tyers.
I don't expect you may have ever seen quite, as bizarre, a rendition of a sculpin, as I submit forthwith. but wait till you see it in the water.
I hope they help, each of you, catch many BIG fish.

Cascadekiller,
Your "Skating Skulpin" sure is a cute little fly. I did notice one, little, thing though. It looks like you just might have a negative (bead) right next to a positive (deer hair). A light vs heavy, buoyancy vs density, that sort of thing. (Oh! touchy-feely time)
Surely, you can see the conflict of purpose between the bead and the deer hair?. Should it float, or sink?
Would the descriptive action word for such a fly be more like "wallow" than "skating"?
Did I mention how cute that little 'ol fly is?...well, it is! And I'll bet it, just might, catch fish like crazy!

BAWWAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!
That quite possibly could be the most funny thing I've seen in years! I can't say much about what others can tie up but, as for myself spun deer hair is a great way to make a mess and not much more! ;)

Yeah, spun deer hair is not the way to make sculpins, it is the way to acquire one of those little white jackets or an orange jumpsuit. Simply maddening and I don't care if they do catch fish... On that note, I saw some sculpin flies at Ted's the other day that were incredible. They were like a size 4 6x long (at least) and the entire thing was spun deer hair, different colors shaped into a sculping with eyes and a dorsal fin (and yes, pectoral and tail as well). It was intense. I had a fleeting thought to buy 12 for this swap and claim I tied them and then I woke up...

Glad you enjoyed it James, but I'm serious! damn-it! lol.....
No spun deer hair in mine though, so no worries.
I've seen those flys, you mention Willie, they look like some kind of cartoon rendering with the big eye's they have. Just the kind of fly that would drive anyone crazy, talk about spun deer hair!......Yikes!!!!
