I have not done a whole lot of fishing in lakes, but would like to this year. I would like to start tying up some flies (midges), but I am unsure of size. What size midges would be best for West side lakes? East side lakes?

Thanks.

Chris

My go to size is 14 followed by 16, 12 and occasionally size 18 for both West and East.

I would hope that you aren't limiting yourself to midges. You may want to consider some larger flies to fish deep with eiher sink tips or full sinking lines. ;)

I will not be limiting myself to midges. I have found some other patterns for nymphs and leeches. I also picked up my sinking line a few weeks back.

As for midges, everything from a size #20 to #10. Size #12 thourgh #18 are what I use most often. Just watch the water and mimic the size of the bugs. Hare's Ears, skip nymph's and soft hackle's, and a variety of damsel nymphs, work great for me personally on the basin lakes.

My favorite fly is a grey soft hackle for mountain lakes. The brookies love them and so do the bows/
