Upturned eye hooks

Anyone know where I can get hooks with upturned eyes? I recently bought two issues of that Brit magazine, "Fly Fishing and Fly Tying Journal," and saw some simple looking dry fly patterns that used those hooks. Anyone keen on a resource? I'd prefer to shop at a brick and mortar fly shop if at all possible. I live in Seattle.

Most of the up-eye dry fly hooks I've used have been really short shank. They look great tied up in the vise, but unless you use a turle knot, the hooking properties pretty much blow. especially if you use open loop knots, which is just about the only knot I use on a dry. But, since you live in Seattle, Kaufmann's can order you pretty much any hook you want. Tiemco makes a short shank up eye dry fly hook. Can't remember the number off the top of my head.

I was at the Orvis Store Saturday in Bellevue. 50% off size 16 nymph upturned eye hooks. In otherwords 50 for 4.95:thumb: Seemed like they had all sorts of hooks on sale.

I have to add a second vote to Phil's comment above about 'hooking quality.' I've found very much the same thing over the years. "Only" good thing about an up-turned eye on a fly hook is it increases the hooking 'gap' a bit. That said, not sure it really adds to the mix?:confused:

The Mustad 94842 is an excellent up eye standard dry fly hook available in sizes 10 - 28.

The Tiemco hook is a 500U. It's only available in small sizes. The Mustad 94842 is available in larger sizes. I have tied with both of these hooks but don't anymore. I sold a bunch of hooks on eBay and all the up eyes went with them. I found that at best the hooking quality of these hooks was equal to other hooks, it definitely wasn't better, and was probably not quite as good.

It sure is fun to try new things though. Give the UE's a try and let us know what you think.
