View Full Version : Ever use llama for tying?
I have this old llam skin rug in multi true colors I bought in Peru years ago..getting a little old and wife says get rid of it. It is about 4 feet by 6 ft oval.. white brown black hair... sort of like alpaca
I wonder if it would be good for fly tying?

Yes LLama is good for tying flies. The longer hair works like Yak only softer for tying streamers and such and the shorter hair can be turned into dubbing brushes. I got turned onto it by receiving some in a fly tying material swap.

Ok, this is sorta off subject but cause were talking about weird hair for fly tying, would Human Head hair be any good for tying flys?

Wooly,
I don't know how effective the fly was; but there is mention of a tyer of atlantic salmon flies using some of his wife's hair as a wing back in the 1800's. There have also been some of the old atlantic salmon fly masters of the 1800's using hair from their Labs and Golden Retrievers for wings.
It might be worth using some human hair as a wing; but I'd be very careful about where and how I got it. Otherwise, domestic tranquility could be very adversely effected! And the local constabulatory might take a sudden interest in your fly material and where you obtained it.

J Edson Leonard wrote about using a piece of his grizzly white beard to tie a fly that was very effective for browns.

I've used some of my hair to tie flies before, haven't gotten to fish them yet though.

I've tried to use llamas for tying but their work ethic sucks. All they want to do is take 15 minute "grass" breaks. And with those hooves they're not much good for anything smaller than size 4 clouser anyhow.... sorry couldn't resist :p

I tried some of my own hair for dubbing after it all turned white. Didn't work too well.
I was wondering how long before someone jump on that one :)
