Hello, I am going on a trip to Baja in June and was wondering if a 10wt rod is fine for dorado and roosterfish. I will be fishing off pangas, kayaks, and the beach. Thanks for any input.
yep, exactly the right rod weight. make sure you get set up with some 'tropical' lines otherwise you will be fishing with limp noodles that don't shoot worth a hoot. i would pack a floater, intermediate, t14tips with an intermediate running line. if you are going to troll till you hook up that first dorado, incorporate a quality ball bearing salt water black anodized swivel. i have short mono loops on the business end of my lines so i loop the swivel and then the leader.
have a ball, dorado are great eating as well, if you have a mind to keep a couple.

10 wt is great for those waters. I think 2 of them is even better. Seriously. Long way to go with one rod. If you can handle a 500 grain head, I would run right over to sierratradingpost.com and pick up a couple of the Orvis depth charge lines. I fell in love with them when I worked for an Orvis dealer. Great teeny style line with wonderline coating on sale for about 46 bucks. sierratradingpost.com also has an 11 wt. tarpon floating wonder line for $39. Overlining is great down there, because if you are able to score chum, and the dorado are in, most of your casts will be under 40 feet... if you're smart... Plus if big poppers are on the menu overlining doesn't hurt either.
I generally fish that area with a floater for poppers and a good sinker. Another reason for 2 rods. I prefer full lines to shooting heads, which is why I recommend teeny style lines (Depthcharge, Rio deepsea, etc...). Check water temps before you go and if it is cool enough you might want wire for the sierras. A ton of fun, but it takes a miracle to land one without wire. Once again only an issue if the water is cooler than normal that time of year.
I've stayed at rancho Leonero. Good operation. At dinner they usually serve fish and meat, which is good if you either don't like fish, or don't like it cooked well done... Which they tend to do down there. You should have a blast! I envy you. I was trying to find someone to go in July, but can't find anyone with enough uevos to risk the heat:mad:
