I saw this in the PI this morning. If anyone has a trip planned in the near future, I wanted to give you a heads up. It looks like you may want to change your plans. This is a bummer for both the lodges and their clients.

Tofino over Labor Day was one of the spots that I was considering earlier this summer. The lack of good fishing reports on the Canadian boards discouraged me from going there. I've been there several times and have had a great time every time. Instead we are going to the Fraser and camp on one of the islands. Will be gear fishing for sox & springs.

Breaking News:
WeighWest is going to stay open:

Recent fish reports aren't very encouraging, but they're making the effort to give us an opportunity to go.
And while googling Tofino, ran across this article for those considering camping out up there:

Hatman,
That is good news for folks with trips planned. Thanks for the update. I've never fished there, but I've spoken with Shawn several times and have heard nothing but good reports on Weigh West operations. Kudos to the owner for stepping up with a solution against an order that would hurt his business.

You're welcome, Brian. Weigh West is a great place to stay and an excellent operation. If you ever get the chance to go with the FlyFishing program, their flyboats are really great. And the scenery is fantastic.
The new owner is a real class act.
I'm disappointed we've decided to put off the trip next month due to the poor reports (so far). But maybe it'll all change with some rain. :)

New owner? I heard earlier this summer that was something was brewing, but I didn't realize there was new ownership.
I love that place, and have always the facility was run extremely well and a great place to visit and fish. To me it was something that any aspiring saltwater fly fisherperson should put on their list of "things to do".
How many places can you find that dedicate themselves to saltwater fly fishing only, and how many persons out of a 100 can say they've gone on saltwater fly fishing trips, in the ocean, for salmon? Not quite like going fishing for taiman in Mongolia, but definitely something that is definitely out of the ordinary for fly fisherpersons.
Anyway, any news or details on the 'new' ownership? :thumb:
Thanks!

Richard,
I talked with Shawn about 2 weeks ago and my recollection is that he said there was a new owner. I don't know anything personally about him; just the news article, and I was very impressed with his attitude about a) talking plainly about the local gov't officials, b) his desire to keep his businesses operating, and c) most importantly, caring about keeping his employees employed.
I had mixed feelings about mentioning the poor salmon reports for fear of potentially hurting their business, but Shawn mentioned their flyboats were almost fully booked for September. Hopefully the fish will come in (and the rain too) to make it a win-win for all.

I have been there for couple of last years now, and can tell you, the place is great. The fly fishing boats seem to never be just sitting at the docs with no clients.
