Rio's website recommends a Skagit 450 with no cheaters for that rod. So even if you go with a different brand, or make your own, you should be good with about 450 grains for the body. I believe that the Skagit recommendations are also supposed to include a 15 foot tip, which is probably going to be around 95-109 grains for that weight rod. This gives you in the neighborhood of 550 grains for the whole line, in case you're building one.

If anyone feels I need correcting, please chime in!

Don't forget the head to rod length ratio when you are figuring for your head either - 3-3.5 x's the length of your rod. As far as the recs though, I believe that BConrad is correct in the assumption of the 15 ft head.

For future reference, the above is (Simon G's) recommendations for their lines to almost every (spey) rod ever built.

Oh, crap, Fred, it looks like Rio moved that helpful link. Does anyone know a new url for it?

It looks like they shuffled some pages around. Here's a link to the PDF of the line recommendations (PDF):

Here's the general spey section:

How the hell's that for timing; post the link .. and the busy beaver's at RIO roll you over in 24 hours.

One other 'Skagit Head' set up that's turning out to be a real blasting casting machine is a combo of the Vision ACE shooting head topped off with a sinking tip of choice. Behind the shooting head connect it up to a RIO (or someones) .030 running line.

Trust me, you don't know how far you can chuck a fly until you run one of these puppies!
