Does anyone know where I can get honking big--and I mean honking big--peacock eye-feathers? The ones I've seen in fly shops are usually in those sealed plastic bags--bags that limit the size of the feather plumes.

The best ones I've ever found were bought at the Fly Fishing Show in Bellevue. They were HUGE! And the herl off the lower part of those feathers were long and thick-fibered. I could get some serious mileage off of one herl like I haven't seen before or since. Plus, the flies I tied with the herl looked damn good!

If someone knows of a source in Seattle, I would really appreciate it. Right now, I can't drive, so I need some place that relatively convenient.

I've no idea what size makes for 'huge', but I've got a some very fresh I'd be willing to part with. Drop me a note with desired size and any possible trade items if interested. I can easily measure/send photo etc.

This is one of those times where what you pay really is an indication of what you'll get.

You need to find someone who raises the birds. They are the best source for great feathers.

As long as you understand 'the very best' doesn't come 'cheap.';) Confession time: Kate's about a mile from me and I have (OR rather had) a several huge 'veggie boxes' planted in just about anything you could want.

"Yo, Gal ... a trade???" Well, not really a quote, but she's given me her 'seconds,' read that stuff that's not up to snuff for 'retail.' But, all things considered, I'm WAAAAAY a head of the game. Do the 'fish know?' Trust me, the 'firsts' are something you have to see to believe!

Fred,
I actually emailed Kate earlier today. Had to do that because part of her website wasn't operating properly. Prices not showing. I'll probably end up ordering some of her feathers. Though I did pose a trade scenario to Happy G., I tend to burn through the herl making Careys. Them and Thin Mint Leeches call for a lot as the flies get churned out. I guess I just love patterns that call for peacock herl.

The thing is with P-herl, some patterns do well with good quality, while others prefer less so. Like chironomid pupae patterns do better with coarser stuff for the collar. Meanwhile, Careys look better if you use the good stuff. Right now, I'd like to get as much as I can for now. Being laid up like I am, I don't want to come up short.

I just got my delivery from Siskiyou. I couldn't believe how nice their peacock eye feathers are. These were way better than I imagined! I am so stoked to use them now. I actually think I can tie a Carey with only one of those herls! Suh-weet! :thumb:

I wrote my check as soon as I saw the goodness of the goodies.
