From another thread, the topic came up on using nail polish to finish off thread heads. The question I have is about polish color. How many people out there use colored polish? I've started using this midnight forerst stuff with tiny metal flakes in it. I haven't had the opportunity to fish the flies I've tied with that polish, so I don't know if this is a good or bad thing. Anyone out there with more experience on this?

I have more nail polish than my wife. Mostly use the SH clear hard as nails on heads. But, I use black, yellow, orange, green. I just nabbed a whole bottle of silver that was only used to hide a cosmetic scratch on the handle of the dish washer. Some are expensive but also check out the dollar store. Works great for making eyes.

Years ago we used to purchase wood bobbers from Herters and then paint them, first with a flat white coat and then with one of the colors Herters sold. A friend, Randy Hieronymus decided that he could save a little money by lifting a few bottle of his wife's nail polish. As it turned out he came up with a killer color that accounted for several winter steelhead from the Green River. It was Revlon "Frosted Champagne Taffy". To my knowledge he didn't try it on a fly.

I paint all of the eyes on my weighted flies with Red nail polish to identify them. That is the ones that don't incorporate a beadhead.
