I was in Sportsman's Wherehouse in Missoula and they had artificial jungle cock, basically thick waterproof paper printed with the patern. It wasn't expensive.

Jungle cock makes a great Christmas present.
Here are a couple of other resources for you.

I've long been under the impression that the bird is endangered, thus importation (and sale?) of the feathers is illegal, like the situation with polar bear. Am I wrong?

Wild Jungle cock is no longer brought in...not legally anyway. It has been raised domestically for a while now, and hence the somewhat lower pricing. You have some good leads up above on prices. Expect to pay well over $150 for a decent cape. You can get utility grades for less for sure.

I lucked out here in my town in BC one day...walking along the main drag and passed by a second hand store....there in the window was a huge cape, with beautiful nails on it....I wandered in...played stupid and asked what the purdy feathers were for. The guy said he thought they were for fly tying. I said I tied flies but had never seen them used before. I aske what he wanted for it????

When he told me the price I asked if he had more. He said no sorry that was it......I handed him my $3 and RAN FROM THE STORE:thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

Never to be repeated for certain

I handed him my $3 and RAN
I knew I should have immigrated to BC.

THREE DOLLARS?!?

That is a once in a life time deal for sure.

I am going to spring for a jungle cock cape some day. Those little 10 packs are not exactly cost effective.

Umpqua Feather Merchants has a version of imitation jungle cock by Metz. It is a similar feather in size painted to look very close to the reel thing. They are quite cheap!

Hey Dominic. I have never used the imitation eyes and have seen some horrible ones and some ok ones. You cant beat the real thing so if you havent bought any yet pm me your address and I will send you some for you to try out. Theres no substitute for the real thing. Kevin

If you purchase a utility grade jungle cock cape you will notice a lot of split nails. It is pretty simple to preen these cracked nails with a bit of Softex and let them dry on a piece of waxed paper. This will eliminate the cracks and strengthen the jungle cock nails.
In use, jungle cock takes on cracks pretty rapidly and a fish or two will almost always knock one completely off of your fly. However, it adds elegance to a fly that is difficult to match with any substitute.
Good Tying,

Actually, you are incorrect on both counts :ray1:

ALong with Les' , another way of repairing split nails, and I think a great way is with hot glue. If you hold the nail in your fingers so its fixed and put the tiniest drop of hot glue on the reverse side, let it cool and you have a fixed nail. The hot glue does not show thru and appears to be a grade A feather and when tyed in the reverse does not show ofcourse.
