Bear works pretty well as a ribbing material. Of course it makes great streamer hair for both trout and salmon streamers.
Want a black PT nympth then sub in some black bear fur for a BF nympth.
I also ended up with a nice sized peice of black bear fur a year ago myself and so far these have been what I have come up with.
The under fur seems to be a intresting dubbing material but I have not really tried it yet myself.

AK Best uses it to under his marabou streamer tails to keep the tails from wrapping around the hook. See "Production Fly Tying"

Black Bear; Black Bear Green Butt, Black Bear Red Butt, all three versions used for steelhead in years past. It was rated as a pretty good clear water fly but didn't gain wide use among steelheaders and did not make it into Roy Patrick's Pacific Northwest Fly Patterns, our early Bible on fly patterns in Washington and BC. Originally used for Atlantic salmon in the Maritime provinces where it was often dressed on double hooks. Singles were more popular out on the pacific coast. As with other old patterns, the Black Bear is probably as good today as it was sixty years ago.
Good Tying,

One of my favorite classic hairwings even more so than the Skunk, been fishing it for about 25 years now. Give it a go you may be surprised.

Supposedly they make good tails on flies like royal wulffs, humpies, and adams.

I am a BIG fan of the Black Bear in a small size tied sparcely for summer runs. Use a chartreuse and red tag with a small silver rib and you got a sweet fly that will work great. I also catch rainbows and bulls from the same fly usually while targeting steelhead. Also, the stuff is slippery so make sure to backup your head with a cement or really tight turns on the bobbin.

And there is always the Black Nose Dace minnow pattern.
