So, on this fly, are the weighted 'eyes' at the head of the fly just for weight to get the fly down? It would seem so given that the fly is meant to look like a squid (right?), but that also means that the fly would be sinking the 'wrong' way, wouldn't it? Again, perhaps too much thought on a tried and true pattern?

I don't know for sure, but think the fly is just supposed to look "out there". Don't think it's supposed to be a squid. The eyes help sink it. I know I tried tying them up with chain eyes (since I hate fishing weighted flies), and had a hell of a time getting it to fish the way I'd want. So used heavier tubes and lead barbell eyes and problem solved.

I think Jerry's got the 'idea' down pretty darned well. To me anyway, 'intruders' are intended to 'piss off' the fish due to their size (BIG), not as a reminder of "food." The weight is just to get the darned thing down, and keep it there, even if using a heavy sink tip.

Its suppose to be based on a prawn or squid. I was walking to the river with a dude one day that turned out to be one of Ed's good friends. He said Ed only uses this pattern about 2% of the time. I thought that was interesting. But actually not suprizing considering to tie the fly correctly it takes almost an hour.
