What hooks do you all usually tie Clouser minnows on? Brand, model, size? And what size barbell eyes correspond with hook sizes to retain proportion? These will be for fishing local beaches... obviously!
Thanks!

I tie mine on Mustad 3407 and 34007, all the way from 8 to 2/0+ As far as eyes, I put on whatever "looks" right for the size of fly and hook, and whatever it'll take to get that fly to sink upside down, depending on materials and the water I'm fishing. I don't have a formula or anything, you kinda get to know what you need on there.
I can't think of eye sizes off the top of my head. Lemme go look and get back to ya...

I use the eagle claw 413 saltwater jig hook for my clousers and the largest lead eyes i can get.

I'll be darned, I actually wrote this down several years ago. I found this tucked in a book I had-
These are general guidlines for a 34007, and hour glass eyes.
Hook.............eye size
8..................1/8"
4-6...............5/32"
1/0-2............3/16"
1/0-2/0.........7/32"
2/0-3/0+......I Balz

My pleasure. I keep a written log on my tying bench with stuff like that in it. I guess I did have a formula for it after all! These are just general guidlines, and vary with the bouyancy of the fly, current you're fishing and so forth. Ya know, common sense stuff. :)
Glad I could help some. :thumb:

I tie mine on Mustad 3407 and 34007
Jeff, been a while since I bought some hooks for tying. Do the mustads require sharpening to be sticky sharp/ready for fishing? I see great pricing on them but not on others and was wondering if this has changed (any mustads I used to use I typically sharpened first).
Thanks for posting that guideline.

tiemco 9394 sz 4 or 6
tiemco 811s sz 4
5/32" eye.
Makes a nice proportional fly, sorta like This (http://www.washingtonflyfishing.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=16850&cat=500&ppuser=5975)one.
Having said that, there isn't really a "wrong" way to proportion clousers...within reason.
IMHO and YMMV,

Most definately need sharpened. the 3407 will sharpen easier than the 007's FWIW.
