I was wondering if anyone out there has ever built their own fly turner/ dryer. I was wondering what to use for a motor, i do know that it should be a small low RPM model. i have acees to a wood shop so making a stand should not be a problem.
Thx. Frank

You can scrounge a lot of different motors: microwave turntable motors are good. So are barbecue rotisserie motors. You can find both of those at someplace like Goodwill...There are also supply houses that sell surplus electronic equipment that offer motors for just a few dollars, but shipping can eat savings away.

I currently have one I got from a dying microwave, and it's nice and small.

I got mine from an old disco ball setup. The possibilities are endless.

A BBQ motor is the eaisest to find and set up. Mount it on a simple wood stand, insert a dowel (shape it fit with a slight taper) in the receiver and add a round peice foam to that.

Frank,

I have a beautiful fly turner made by William Survey. William is a 'fixture' at some of the fly shops around Puget Sound - and in addition to being a pretty fair hand at tying flies, he's a very accomplished clockmaker and woodworker.

The motor he used in my turner is a 3.5 W, 4.8 RPM model, made (or distributed) by Timetech, of Whitewater, Wisconson.

Hope this helps.

Double D has it right. It's the easiest to find (and cheapest) and VERY easy to setup. How I made mine. I think I was out about $5 for whole thing (used scrap wood and screws I had laying around to make the frame). Hot glue a piece of foam on it (which I had for scraps too at the time) and I was good to go.

I just finished building mine, here is what I used:

Battery Operated BBQ Rotisserie Motor
Keystock
Wooden Wheel
Styrofoam glued to the wheel.

I got the keystock and the motor at a surplus store, cheap, cheap!!

Go to ebay and look for the high torque low rpm AC motors...got mine for $3.50 plus $2.00 shipping...excellent rod turner. Just cut an old extension cord and you're in business.

It's the same Timetech motor Hywel mentioned.
