I don't own one but have tried this rod out. It's a pretty great rod. I guess my question would whether you like a slower full-flexing spey rod? It's what Im trying to master but a lot of people like faster spey rods.

howdy. i used to own one and it was my number 1. Too much gear and the fact that I haven't fished since July (my midlife crisis) made it go away. It's a near perfect rod in my opinion. Light and lively. One of the funnest rods you can cast in terms of seeing how far you can cast with a 14 foot rod. Very good at "off-balance no space get it out there any way you can" casts.
I used lots of lines on it. I preferred lines in the 80 foot range, but it handles anything you care to throw from skagit to XLT. 625 to 660 grain lines in the 75 to 85 foot range were great and never made the rod feel mushy. A no-brainer would be to match it up with a CND line of course. A midspey also works wonderfully if you already have one.
To say it is slow is inaccurate. It flexes fully, but it has a very fast recovery and can throw teeny tiny little V loops. I loved it. If I was going to be chasing steelhead between 6 and 17 lbs, with a possibility of a 20, it would be one of the first rods I'd grab:thumb:

ST,
I started to say I love this rod. Oops, I mis-read. I have the Solstice 13'4" 6/7, but it does throw an 8 wt Spey line very well. It's my all around winter rod, and I'd use it for exactly what you propose. You'll just have an extra 11" of rod to do it with.

I would recommend this rod wholeheartedly. It is my summer rod.
