The current issue of Saltwater Fly Fishing Magazine has a cover article that asks "Is David Nelson the Sports Best New Fly Tier?" There is a four page spread in the magazine titled The New Old School that features a number of David's flies. David has been posted some of his flies here as Davidstrout. He is from White Plains, NY. Check out the article and Davids recent posts on this forum. He is doing some amazingly creative tying. I look forward to trying to adapt some of his ideas for Puget Sound.

Steve, I second your remarks. I had the opportunity to meet David at the November NJ tying show. He's a very nice guy. He was kind enough to give me two flies he tied right in front of me at the show (which I returned in favor with a half dozen of my bright speys). My mind is currently turning to thoughts of fall coho chasing down some of those patterns tweaked for NW use. I'm going to have to tie up some big ones to try and tempt any stripers that may be in the lower Umpqua tidewater when I'm home in April. I'm sure some smaller versions would drive sea runs nuts in the sound.

Here's one snap shot of some of his flies that I saw in November.

Cameron, thanks for sharing the awesome photo. I am planning to come down for the Oregon Fly Tying Expo. I would love to see the flies that David tied. My goal is to have something to toss to Coho this fall as well. Maybe we can share some ideas and collaborate on getting this project started. Please let me know if you are interested.
Best regards, Steve

I recently recieved a bakers dozen from David of some GREAT steelhead flies. I had ordered them before the article came out. Last I talked to David he has been flooded with orders since the article. The flies he ties are truly unique and beautiful and they fish great. I have also mentioned to him about getting some flies for some ocean salmon fishing. Hey David sounds like the salmon guys on the west coast are coming for you. Better start thinking up some patterns although Im sure you have a few in mind. David is a great guy who is doing well with something he loves. My congrats to David and if you get a chance to check out his flies up close and a chance to fish them you wont be disapointed. Kevin
