Will this rod cast Skagit line well? I have gotten a few answers and they all vary a little.

For example...
Yes, 550 grains with a cheater...

Yes, 550 grains, fine by itself...

No, go with a midspey (WC 8/9/10)...

all of the above...

I am new to this speyworld, have a rod that I have never cast (i know, i know... cast them first, but i got a great deal on it) and am looking for the best line to get me learned/started. I plan on using it for winter steelies and salmon in the greater Seattle, Olympic Pen. areas.

Thanks!

I fish the 1408 LS2 often and my fav is the Airflo 8/9 Skagit,I also like the 600 grain S.A. skagit line.
As for the rio the 550 also works,I don't like to use cheaters for rods 15' and under but that's just me

I agree with speyforsteel. I used the rio 550 w/o a cheater & 9 wt type 3 & 6 tips as well as t14 with 3-4" weighted string leeches . I thought it was a honey of a setup. Laser tight loops & awesome distance. Wind wasn't a problem either.
My 0.2 cents.

Hey - I notice you are in Seattle...if you have the opportunity - bring the rod out to Mike Kinney's Sunday Spey event (http://www.allaboutthefly.com/custom.php?page=421) on the Skykomish..... We've got a variety of lines - including some that you note below.....

try the lines out to find what matches up best for you.

I have the same rod: Skagit 550 with 5' cheater, 8 wt tips and it casts great. That is with the right person casting it !

Thanks everyone! I am going to test it out tomorrow without a cheater and see how it goes.....

I am going to check out the Spey event at AATF as well...

Cheers!

Guide Kevin Feenstra , who is on the scott prostaff , was instrumental in the designing of the LS2 series . It is Dr. Way Yins' baby though..Kevin states that the LS2 1408 is probably the best tips rod ever built. I line mine with a homemade skagit of about 580 grns ,7 ft. cheater and 10 ft T-14 .. It will throw even more grainage than that comfortably.. Truelly is an awesome stic.

First time casting this weekend and I'm Hooked!! Thanks to Riane for taking me out and showing me the ropes....

The rod is awesome with just a 550 Skagit, can't wait to load it up a bit more with a cheater. Man, I think I just took my fishing addiction to a whole other level...:thumb:

Dude, had fun fishing with you last weekend. Were you able to get out again this past weekend? I must say I was impressed casting your LS2, I am a novice caster but I was able to seriously fling that thing with tips and it was a lot of fun.
