What's the deal with people drinking and tying flies? I'm wasted and I just tried to tie a fly and I suck at it. See examples; http://www.washingtonflyfishing.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=9150&cat=18035
yeah really????, I never do that.

They say that when you can tie a size 18 dry fly after a downing a few single malts then you know you have mastered the art of fly tying.
Of course it takes lots of practice.:beer1:

That's because you're 14 and under age. You can't drink and tie w/ any success until you turn 21.

That's because you're only 18 and probably got liquored up on Coors Light. Do most anything drunk and it will suck.
There's a difference between those of us who tie with a drink at hand, and tying "wasted." :ray1: ;)

I usually pour a glass of wine and it sits on the tying table until I'm done.

I've tried a variety of liquids while tying flies: gin, single malt, wine....and the winner for best flies is....coffee.

I should have a few shots that way my shakes would go away and I would have a steady hand. It's hard to tie in more junk when your hand is moving all over the place.

I like a nice aged bourbon filtered though lots of ice in a Manhatttan size glass. That is the most enjoyable way for me to tie flys; but if you're looking for production, hot coffee in the morning, tea during the day. But I normally tie for pleasure and not quantity.
First sips brace me so I think I can take on any kind of pattern; as I get into the tying the drink gets more watered down while I figure out my initial mistakes and get the kinks out of the dressed fly. After the 2nd drink my quality starts dropping and I'm done tying for the day. Cheers.

Always beers with saltwater flies. The alcohol soothe the pain from the sharp hooks. : P

Ask yourself...do you save buying store bought flies and drinking some fine ales/lagers/whiskey/wine ......because drinking and fly making might not go hand in hand. I like to snort a few lines and then tie some crazy ass flies. I had to switch to the blow because the CDC was sticking to my crack pipe residue coated fingers! Seriously
Rumor has it that PassMan once tied 172 muddler minnows in sixty minutes. Go Figure:confused:

passman you live in monroe, I thought it was meth? A good dark beer and the tying bench go hand in hand for me. Plus a little buzz and the steelhead flies get gaudier and more creative. Just dont try to tie tiny dries.

ROFLMAO....man, does that question bring back memories. A favored spot, tying in the evening while camping out for the next day's fishing. A fresh bottle of Midleton Irish Whiskey, some ice, and the need for about two dozen callibaetis emergers and dries. The more I drank, the beadier eyed I became (according to two other reprobates who were egging me on). The flies deteriorated to the point that the next day my buddies took the good ones and left me with whatever. I got back by hiding my bottle the next night!!

I'm not allowed to drink around the vice anymore because I just put several plumes of yellow marabou on everything I tie. MMMMM colors....
