... if a Pflueger Medalist 1598 RCX will hold a Windcutter 8/9/10 spey? I'm getting ready to put together my first rod this spring and need a reel for it someday. I'm pretty much stuck between the Okuma Integrity and the Pflueger but am not sure if the line will fit on the Pflueger.

Thoughts???

Have you eyeballed the two reels side by side? The 10/11 Integrity will do the job with at least 100yds of Jim Teeny 30# backing. The Teeny backing is a bit bulkier then SA 30# backing.

You can always get some Micron backing. Also you can chop off some of the running line with no effect on "real world" operation.

That helps a bit. I haven't seen them side by side but I've seen them each alone. I have a hard time visualizing how much line would fit on either one. The Pflueger is narrower but deeper.

Alas, I'll probably have to try and convince someone to spool them both up.

Why spool them both up? I've already told you the 10/11 Integrity will hold the line and with how much backing. The Pflueger you mention will hold a 12wt line with backing, and while I haven't found a place that tells me how much backing I'd bet this reel will serve your purpose.

Another reel you might look at is the Okuma Sierra in the biggest size. I think it is 10/11.

No offence intended. I misread your response to imply that the Pflueger might need to have the mainline cut down. I hadn't thought of the Sierra.

Thanks

There was no offense taken on my part.

I wasn't specifically speaking about the Pflueger but I did say you could always cut off some of the running line, as much as 20' in a radical case without hurting real world function. It is my experience that most people don't ever use that last 20' anyways and the space on the reel could better be used to hold backing.

If you like the Pflueger and it fits your budget I would go for it.

Speaking for the 'Phlug,' it's about as bullet proof a reel as you can get irrespective of price. Used them for years (including nipping off some of the running line as suggested by Mike) before 'upgrading' to Reddingtons, etc.
