Saw this spey reel in an issue of Fly Fusion magazine. They look pretty cool, and the price seems pretty decent. Has anyone had any experience using these reels? If so how is the drag system? Thanks in advance.:thumb:

The drag is more than sufficient for anything that swims in fresh water well except maybe for a big musky. Holds a ton of spey line and backing. Thats the biggest Lochsa 11/12 in the picture. Satisfied I am. Good value whats the price now ? Mine was on a special introductory sale for $ 120 a year ago. Not seen any one else with one yet out here.

Thanks for your reply BG:) I've seen them online for $165...I really like the look of it. I e mailed Loon products and they infromed me that the 9/10 would be large enough to hold a Airflo 9/10 weight Skagit line plus a ton of gel spun backing. Seeing as you own the larger model, would you feel the 9/10 would work? Or should I look into the largest model if I decide to get one?:hmmm:

I've only had experience with the 11/12 model. It is a nice looking reel but it is too light to balance a 14' spey rod. The 11/12 model will hold a WC/Delta 9/10 and 150yds of 30# SA backing.

Thats why I bought the 11/12 Lochsa so I could use it on some lighter weight spey rods, like 6/7/8 's. I doubt if any of my spey rod and reel set ups balance perfectly. 11/12 is 6.9 ozs so yes it is light for the largest size spey reel.
Could try some golf/tennis lead tape around the reel seat if the balance is way off but you would probably have to remove the tape after each day fishing. You can find the lead tape on the internet, reminds me I need some for my sand wedge.;)
