Well today was the last day on the Stilly for a while. It was a little unreal standing in the the river with the snow pouring down at times. It was falling fast enough at times that big wet blobs of snow would slide off my hood with any large head movement.

It was a great day on the river though. Quiet, only a few distant fellow fishermen, river was in great shape, cold, but not too cold. (I say that as my legs still tingle from the cold soak they got today) Didn't touch a fish but there are worse things. :thumb:

This was also my first day of actually fishing with a spey rod. It was a struggle at times but I didn't hook myself and mostly got the fly where it needed to be. I'm somewhat amazed at the amount of river I covered versus what I could have done single handed. I think I like this spey rod fishing.

It's amazing how once you get the jist of it and everything goes right how effortless it feels. And to me, I love just casting the thing...I'll be concentrating on casting that perfect loop as far as I can so much that I'll forget that I'm supposed to be fishing. :hmmm:

It is definitely an addiction!

Forgot that many Washington Rivers close come the end of Feb. Living with the Rogue in your 'back pocket' is a good thing. River's open for fishing all year 'round. You may have restrictions on what/where you can fish, but for the most part you've got 60'ish miles of river to choose from ... and that's just on the 'top end' of the river.

Fred, that sounds like a nice arrangement. My local rivers are closed now: Snoqualmie, Skykomish, and Snohomish. I'll have to hoof it up to the Sauk or Skagit now to get my fix. :D

Brent, the interesting part of our runs (timing) is winter steelhead season really won't start for another 30-45 days above Grants Pass. We're still casing the last of the 15,000 summer runs up on the top of the river.

Gather there are quite a number of winter fish now below the Grants Pass area, but (as of a few days back) less than 300 'winter fish' have gone over the counter at Gold Ray Dam (Medford). Suspect many of them are actually late run summers.
