Ok, so I'm sure this topic is like beating a dead horse with a stick but I'm still trying to figure it out. What is a good length of T-14 to use with a 600grain rio skagit line. I have the wind cutter tips that are 15'. Should I make it 15' or smaller? Or several different lengths. Never used the stuff before. Thanks!:beathead:

What rod first? Some rods need more grainage than others, rio has a good help on their web site if you let me know what rod you are hucking.

I would probably start with an 8' to 10' piece. I have a 12' chunk of T-14 and find it hard to cast on my 14' Heritage rod (slow / moderate action). I'll probably cut it down to 8' and keep the 4' section for my smaller spey.

You'll probably want a couple of different length's, and only want to use this in sections where the current is quite fast and fairly deep. I seem to use my Type 3 the most and then my Type 6 2nd.

I have 9' of Airflo's 16gr/ft tip ("CCT-330") on the head of my 8/9 (550gr.) airlfo skagit head, if that's a useful comparison. It casts great when I'm casting well, but it doesn't forgive poor anchoring, overpowering etc. The Rio Skagit heads are 10' shorter than Airflos (w/o the cheaters, which the Airflos don't utilize). That's cast with a Burkie 8134

I should think you could get away with 9-10' of the t-14 -- depending on the rod. Start long and then trim back to taste.

I'm using a Loop Blue line 14' 9wt. Thanks for all the help. That gives me a place to start!

First, Skagit heads are not my cup of tea, prefer the Scandi heads for my casting 'style.' That said, it's the over all length of the combined head(s) that count. Skagit heads are usually 3 to 3.5 times the length of the rod. Scandi's 4 to 4.5 the rod length.

Try starting at 3.5 the rod length and shorten up a bit from there, if needed.

Your question can only be answered in general terms because, we don't know your water, how you want to fish it, nor your casting ability.

I think some of the "jedis" stay around 11' or shorter. If you do a seach in the archives of Spey Pages you will find a great deal of info (by some of the best in the business) on building tips using T-14. You may want several lengths for different water but your ability to get it moving when starting the cast will have some influence on how long the longest piece will be.

As has been pointed out start a little long and keep trimming until you can handle it.

Fred and Poppy hit it on the head with their answers.iagree .I Have fished this stuff from 5ftrs all the way to 15ft. Longer it is the more criticle your casting skill is.. And going by using 15ft to reach down a hole I was fishing wed. I would have to say my casting skills arent all that great. :beathead: I usually have on hand a 6ft a 9ft and a 12ft. for casting off the end of a homemade 575grn skagit, on a 13 and a14ft 8wts.
