Some buddies and I are trying to decide on a summer fishing destination. We're thinking of trying somewhere on the beach. Cost is a big factor and it will be a do it yourself type trip. We dig camping and are looking for somewhere with some culture and interesting locals...we're not afraid to mix it up a bit. Does anyone have experience fishing in Baja? What is the fishing like on the northern beaches? Other tropical destination suggestions that can be done on the cheap are very welcome! Thanks guys.

Stephen

Are you going to have a boat? I wasn't sure if "trying somewhere on the beach" referred to both camping and fishing.

No, we won't have a boat. Well, we might get someone to take us out a day or two; I would think it wouldn't be too expensive to hire someone to drive you around a bit.

There are 2 books that will help you plan your trip. The first is a must have - The Baja Catch:
http://www.mexfish.com/apgs/tbc3/tbc3.htm . It will answer most of your questions.

The second is "Baja on the Fly" by Nick Curcione. This book is more fly fishing oriented and deals with tackle and techniques. http://www.amazon.com/Baja-Fly-Nick-Curcione/dp/1571881018

If you can get in at Loreto on the Seat of Cortex between mid July and mid August, particularly if there is a dark moon phase, plunk down your deposit. You will need to hire a boat and pangero. Send me a pm and I'll give you more information.
Good Fishing,

Ditto that. I have fished for perhaps 5 weeks cumulative from Loreto North to Santa Rosalita - mostly out of a boat and mostly in early to mid-July. I was thinking that even Santa Rosalita was further South than you wanted to drive but if not, feel free to PM me.

I have fished all around Baja for the last few years and love it. Primarily around the Cabo area, within 20-30 miles both north and south. Roster fish in the morning surf fishing as well as Tuna, Dorado and Marlin in a boat around the cape/arch. Baja Anglers was the firt firm I hooked up with Grant ownes the place and if memory serves me right he is from the PNW. Google the web site and you will see what species during that time of year are running, Email or give them a call for advice. I know ORVIS opened a shop, look at their website. If you can afford to spend $500 + amongst your group I would recomend either for a day or half day. That way you for sure will get into fish and you can get advice on where to go from the shore. GL!!

He's actually from Texas, but I agree that Baja Anglers is the best outfit in Cabo for fly fishing and light tackle.
