It's time to break out the chum babies boys, I found my first school of fry in the south sound yesterday.
It was in a cove off the main inlet, and not really close to any significant spawning stream, so they must have been cruising a ways. The fry were tiny of course, and the school was only the size of a picnic table, but a couple of minute after seeing the bait, the only surface splash of the day came off about 15 feet from the boat, and I hooked four SRC's on four casts.

So, mark your calendars, grab your favorite patterns, and "Let the wild rumpus begin". I don't know about you, but this marks the first day of spring for me.

saw my first chum fry yesterday. Beautiful evening on the water and plenty of active fish.

I have also been noticing them on this side of the sound. How long does this "hatch" usually last?

even more chum fry out tonight but less fish activity. Much better yesterday in the wind.

I've had a couple beach classes out in the last weeks and have chum fry between 1 and 1 1/2" long in two to three inches of water. Nature is so smart – she makes sure the cutts have lots of food waiting for them when they come out of their spawning streams.

Im kind of a beginner at fly fishing but have been targeting the cutts and cohos with pretty good success. Im near a little crick with lots of chum and saw the chum fry in the creek a few weeks ago, but can someone tell if its chum fry other than looking at them in the water.
