I just bought some Waddingtons to tie some intruder type flies and am wondering how you put them in the vise. I looked at Jack Cook's site and it looked as though he placed the loop at the tail end of the shank in the vise. It also looked like it was sideways. I tried a shank in the vise and it looks wierd. Because the loop is at an angle, the shank comes off the vise at an angle. Is this right? Is there a better way to put the shanks in a vice. Any advice is appreciated.

The way I mount waddington shanks in the vise is like Jack Cook. I place the straight ring eye rear opening in the vise jaws so the bent front eye is bent upward toward me with the shank held in the vise vertically. Just like the pictures on Jack's site. If you have a rotary vise and must have the top of the fly up when you tie simply roatate the vise clockwise a 1/4 turn. In any case tie the top of the fly on the flat facing you and the bottom on the flat away from you. Again, exactly as shown in Jack's Intruder tutorial. The waddington shank body then is in line with the vise jaws just like a regular hook shank. This produces a fly with a traditional up-eye loop eyed fly.

Thanks a lot. I realize now that I was mounting the shank backasswards. It makes more sense now...not sure why I didn't figure that out myself.
