Last Tuesday I started the day off catching a few resident coho along a gravel bar and then went to a point/cove area where resident coho had been been hanging out for the last several months. After several casts I hooked a large fish which turned out to be a +22" 4lb. blackmouth what a surprise! I caught it on a 6 wt. rod and had a few anxious moments when it got near the boat and would go ballistic as it headed for deeper water under the boat. But the bigger surprises were where/when I caught it and what was in it's stomach. I caught it on the edge of the cove where there was little/no current in 15-20 ft. with the mid-day sun shining. It's stomach contained 1 sand shrimp(2" tan color) and parts of another plus what appeared to be 2 coon stripe shrimp(3" very light reddish/brown color). You would think a fish that size would be eating the plentiful bait fish in the area and be in deeper water in the middle of the day. I caught the blackmouth and resident coho on a olive/white S.T. Clouser Minnow. I guess it was just my lucky day with the blackmouth but I'll take those kind of days anytime!
At the same location there were a few schools of resident coho chasing bait fish on the surface. They "schooled" me as I got no hookups. On Saturday I am going to take Steve Rohrbach there to see if he can "break the code" for those resident coho with one of his "magic" fly patterns. I have confidence that he will be able to do that. When he does, he is such a nice guy that he will give me a "magic" fly without me having to whine or beg. The pressure is squarely on you "buddy"!
The rest of the day I caught quite a few sea-run cutthroat and called it quits after landing a 19-20" sea-run cutthroat. Almost all of the sea-run cutthroat were caught on Al's fly(reddish/brown shrimp pattern).
It was one of those memorable days which don't happen often enough!
