Has anyone used the Marryat MR reels in the salt?
If you have what do you think of them?

I have an old Marryat MR 8.5A that has seen off-and-on use in the salt for a good many years. I've always rinsed it thoroughly with fresh water after such use and it shows absolutely no signs of corrosion or other problems. I have a couple of Marryats and believe their reputation for fragility is not warranted, mine have given me good and reliable service.

Been using one for a few years now in the salt that I bought used a while back. I rinse it off after each use and its still going strong with no signs of wear from the salt.

Thanks for the replies.
I thought the guts looked like they were mostly stainless but I wasn't sure if they would hold up.

When we worked on Marrayats at the Swallows' Nest years ago the only area of special care was the drag system which had a lot of parts. Dan Lemaich, who did the most work on them, always said that the drag should be taken apart over a salad bowl. Preston can probably speak to this issue, if indeed it is an issue.
Just my 2-cents based on old information drawn on from old, suspect recall.

Slightly off-thread, but I've had a couple of Swiss-made CMR56's for about 10 years. I've always admired their workmanship, but their drags are a bit of a mystery to me. Over the arc that the drag adjustment knob turns, the resistance remains close to zero until the knob is turned to about 30% at which point the resistance goes to about 50%. I found this out the hard way after breaking off several largeish basin trout on 4X tippet. While it's easy to compensate by applying some judicious palming, their peculiar design never inspired me to take a closer look at other Marryat products. Hopefully they've improved since then.

I have a half dozen of them that are used intemittently in salt and have had no problem. I got them for their salt water resistance for SRC back before there were many on the market that would do the job. Just looking at them, the anodizing looks a little light but it hasn't been a problem for me. I have a couple of Hardys that look like they were corroded beyond recognition in the same time frame. With the selection of reels today there are probably some less expensive ones with better anodizing.
