I've been out of the spey scene for close to four years and just got my old rod back and am looking for a new line. It's the old style St. Croix 14' 9/10 3piece. I used to have a windcutter 9/10/11 for it and enjoyed that but I didn't cast too many tips with it, mostly fished a floating line. It's now loaded with a RIO Accelerator Spey, not sure of the weight, and that does not cast tips at all. My question is this, how well will this rod throw a skagit line? Will another Windcutter shoot the tips needed to fish these Washington State rivers? Does adding a RIO Skagit cheater to a Windcutter work for making it a skagit line? I haven't read anyone throwing skagit lines with this rod and don't know how it would handle one.
Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve S

I'd bet if you tried an 8/9/10 WC on the rod you'll be quite pleased. Adding a cheater to your WC will not make it a skagit line. All rods will cast skagit lines. If you want to try a skagit line I think a 550 with a 5' cheater of around 70 grns or 80 grns would work well on that rod.

Thanks for the reply, I'll most likely go with the windcutter, I was happy with it before. I'm amazed at massive amounts of lines available now. I've been reading all the resources that I can find online and have been getting a little confused trying to find a line.
By the way, I really enjoy going to your site and all of the resources that you have on there.

Thanks again,

Steve S

Windcutter worked good on my 13 foot 7/8 wgt st croix probably will for the 14 footer too, was a little sloppy throwing T-14 but I adjusted my delivery as they say to get it done.
