I've bought all the supplies to start making my own panfish poppers. Question is: What colors? In the past I've bought white w/ red, yellow, green.... White has generally been a good color and I've found green to not work very well. Anyone have enough experience with them to have favorites?

I'm thinking I'll paint a few black as that's a color I think should work pretty well. I don't think I've ever used a black popper.

Looking for ideas. These will primarily be for bluegill.

I love black poppers, though I'm not an expert. Usually a size 10-12 works best for me with some maraboo and small rubber legs.

I've had good luck with yellow. In both hard body poppers and foam spiders. As seen from below, back lit against the sky, they all appear black. Sometimes I think what matters most regarding colors, is that we can see them.

I made about 2 dozen poppers this past winter from 2 of those kits containing the popper body and hooks. I made 4 different colors, black, green, red and yellow. Unfortunately I have not had a chance to try them as of yet to tell you which colors are best. I figure with these colors I have it covered. I painted them using finger nail polish. They came out great!!:thumb:

Honestly I don't really know if color plays a huge importance. This time of year, I have caught many crappie, perch and bluegill on many flies and have not seen a major difference on color variations. I have a killer panfish pattern if you'd like, pm me and I will send you the info.

Yellow & black seemed to work OK...

I had a 100+ fish day on Monday. Bass, bluegill, perch, and crappie at a warmwater managed lake in central WA.

Obiwankanobi, I will PM you about your killer panfish patterns!

I agree CWUgirl (black and yellow), when I went to CWU I used to fish those ponds right across from Tjossem on Canyon Road (now marked heavily as private property but not a few years back) when I was on my way out to fish the Yakima. They really liked the a black popper and then I painted some yellow spots on them with Rainy's popper paint. Yellow and black neck hackle off the back for some legs along with some chartreuse rubber legs. Green and red popper heads never worked that well for me. I did have some good luck also with white head and red dots. Anyways...sounds like you get over to this side of the mountains quite a bit still so I thought I'd throw that in. Awesome you had a great day. Keep on slayin' 'em.
