Last year it appears there was a caddis swap, and I'm going to host another.
This caddis fly swap is of proven patterns you've landed trout with either on the west or east side of the mountains inluding emergers or dry flys. Looking for seven to ten tyers making one or two flies each; let me know your preference. My preference is two each in case ya loose that awesome new pattern. Deadline to submit by July 3, with flies being mailed out that same week, just in time for the summer hatches.
If interested, respond with basic pattern description and number of flies you'd like to tie (either one or two per tier). I'll put you in on the list at the order received. I'll also P.M.instructions on where to send your flies to.
I'll probably tie one of favorites; either a greeny emerger or cutthroat caddis...

I would like to get in on this one. I don't care if we tie one or two. Also, not to be rude, but I really don't want a dozen elk hair's so hopefully we all have some good original patterns.
Possibilities:
Hydropsyche larvae (deadly on the eastside of the mountains)
All purpose emerger (absolutely amazing pattern before, during and after a hatch)
Lace emerger (fishes well deep to shallow)
I will pick after everyone else chooses. If everyone is going to tie an emerger I will tie a larvae, or vice versa.

I don't have any "original" caddis patterns, but I do know some not so common ones. I'm getting ready to start this years "caddis lifecycle" box anyway. Perfect timing James. one or two patterns/flys, doesn't matter to me. It's your call man.

Right on B, yeah, all of the patterns I have are my own that I created after working a summer on the Yakima for WDFW pumping trout stomachs. I didn't want to come off like an ass, I just meant patterns that might not be as common, or something we might not have seen before. I think we can all tie an EHC in 2 minutes or less...I think the advantage of these swaps is to see what everyone else has been creating, tying, and using with success. Caddis are fun to tie, great idea on the caddis life cycle box! I have been trying to complete mine for years, but I always end up fishing too much, losing flies, and tying to little! HAHA!

I'd also hope for not a lot of basic Elk hairs, but if that's a person's level of tying, not a problem.
My are not real "original" either, just good variations and they fish very well.....:thumb:

There was an article in FlyFishing Magazine a month or three back that had patterns for the complete caddis cycle. It was a dozen patterns or so but I can't for the life of me remember who's patterns they were. I remember they were from colorado and I seem to remember the guys name beginning with an "H". I'll check later. They looked pretty good, Most of them incorporating CDC. I'm pretty pumped to get started on it. I'm still in the materials gathering phase though.
I'll probably tie a spent wing pattern and maybe a cripple if we do 2 patterns. :beer2:

Hell ya, I want to be on this swap. I agree with the EHC idea as well, it is a great pattern, but it is more fun to tie buggy CDC or other patterns that require more skill.

Jofus - Rene Harrop had a pretty good display of CDC based caddis patters for tailwaters in the last issue of FFM.

I am new to the swap thing also and have the same questions as P-FITZ98. I am thinking I would like to join but would like these answers first. Or, is there a fly swap "rules" post somethere I can read through?
Thanks!

Bryan and P-
There are rules at the top of the fly swap forum list. Its a sticky called Fly Swap How it Works or something like that. Read through it, I think it makes pretty good sense. Basically somebody hosts the swap (the swapmeister), and you tie one dozen, or how ever many flies are decided upon depending on the number of "swappers". You send your flies to the swapmeister. When he recieves the flies, he divides them up so that each swapper gets the same # of flies that he/she tied, but of everyone elses patterns. There is a little more too it, but thats the jist, read the thread and let me know if you have any more questions. Hope you guys join in!

Im in if this is still open. I would be good to whip up a hi-viz deer hair dry, or a pupa pattern depending on what everyone else is tying, I think it would be good if we kept it varied - dry, nymphs, emergers.....

Monkey Salad you'll be in.
Swap will be closed up in next day or two so anyone interested can still reply.
So far we've got 7 responders...do you all want to tie one or two patterns? I'd like to propose two patterns each and for a little extra time extend the deadline a week.

I'm in for one or two, but if we tie 2 patterns, I think we should only tie 1 each, and if we tie 1 pattern I am cool with tying 2 for each person. Anyways....
If 1 pattern: All around caddis emerger (fished dry or just below the surface, I don't have good names cause I came up with these myself).
If 2 patterns: Same as above, and a pupae/emerger pattern that can be fished deep below a big stone all the way up to just below the surface behind a dry, and great on the swing no matter where in the water column it is fished.

Ok Bryan, maybe next time...
So far there's 7 tiers and we're open for a couple more; swap closes Friday June 15th. We'll be exchanging one proven caddis pattern per person. Fly can be from subsurface to floating; just not your standard elk hair though.
Those already committed start replying with your pattern of choice, I'll finalize and then send out details this Friday. I'll be tying up a #14 green pupa emerger.

James,
I like you're idea...
We have the option to tie 2 patterns, with 2 we only tie 1 each, and if we tie 1 pattern I am fine with tying 2 for each person. I'd prefer tying two patterns myself, but this way those that have just one favorite can still participate.:thumb:
As I just posted, I'll close and send details Friday.
In the mean time, I've started tying up one of my patterns....

How about an october caddis dry? I'll also tie a Kent Caddis. It's technically an alderfly tied cinnamon sedge style but it works as a caddis imitation in a pinch as well. Nice skinny water pattern. Sound good?

If there's still room, and you're willing to put up with someone who lives one mile from the Washington border, I'm in with a peeping caddis and a modified Hemingway caddis.

Update: We'll be exchanging one proven caddis pattern per person.
I just wanted to clear up any and all confusion about the number of patterns we are tying.
Is it one pattern for sure?
One pattern and two flies per person?
Two patterns with one fly per person?
Is the world round? :beathead: I'm confused
Are we limiting the patterns to trout only or could I tie an October Caddis Spey, that is if there are no objections to those that don't persue steelies?

This swap is now closed...
Tiers are:
1. steeli
2. Be Jofus G
3. James St. Clair
4. obiwankanobi
5. scottflycst
6. P-FITZ98
7. Monkey Salad
8. smulkowski
Sorry for any confusion.
To clarify: You have the option to tie 2 patterns-1 each, or one pattern 2 each. My preference is we tie two patterns each, but either way is fine. Either way with 8 people, this is a total of 16 flies to tie up.
With this number of flies I've extended the deliver deadline from July 2 to July 10th to give us a little more time. Later today, I'll send you guys a P.M. with a summary and mailing details.
obiwankanobi, fine with me regarding the October Caddis

Steeli,
10/4 on the final details. I'll start with one pattern- a pupa emerger and If I can stay ahead of the clock I'll tie a Oct. caddis nymph as well. This should be alot of fun, looking forward to everyone's ideas.

Great, obiwankanobi
You all should have got my details-PM awhile back; deadline is July 10.
Haven't heard from you P-FITZ98. Thoughts on what you're tying up?
I've got my first pattern a pupa-emerger done, starting on the second this weekend.
Looks like most rivers just starting to drop into good flows...
Tight lines.

So far I've received Monkey Salad fox's pupa and a kennebec caddis; nice ties and very good labeling information included.
I've got my two fly patterns tied and ready to go.
Bummer about your misfortunes P-FITZ98. Over the years I've lost a couple hand tied fly boxes packed full of flies; very painful. Robbery...that's even tougher.
If I receive all the patterns by the 10th I should have them mailed out that week, otherwise I'll give an update.

FYI in order for me to get these out tomorrow, I tied two versions of a caddis steelhead pattern. One is a "bastard spey" like fly that is a hot summer and fall steelhead fly. The other is a skater tied in a similar fashion but will skate across the surface like a October caddis or salmonfly depositing eggs. This was a invention on the vice tonight, so it is up to all of you to test it. I apologize to all trouters, hoping to stock up. I couldn't find size 14-16 dry fly hooks, which would have been a Sat trip to Kaufman's so to get these out, I went with steelie patterns. As of tomorrow they are in the mail!! FINALLY, I know!!! Now onto tying clousers!!!!
