View Full Version : Rocky Ford Flies
Hi All! I have recently gotten into fly tying, and here is a batch of scuds I did to use on the Rocky Ford out of Ephrata. I was hoping I might be able to get some feed back on how they look, suggestion for improvements, and if you think they will work. Thanks for any feedback.

They look way to good. If those trout take'em I'll be surprised.
What size hooks are you using?
I never tie on any hook smaller then #16 or bigger than #12
Tie up some egg patterns on #10, and some very high floating, very small dries, very light colored.
Really nice show cast scuds, just like a pro.

I think that your scuds look really nice. My only suggestion would be to try and change them a little bit so that they don't look like everyone elses' scuds. But they look great.

For Rocky Ford you should also debarb your flies. Scuds look good.

Good looking scuds! Here's several suggestions for your next session at the bench.
Try using clear mono instead of metal wire for the segmentation. RF fish can be finnicky and you don't want to risk finding that they decide to take exception to a scud that doesn't look like what they're used to eating.
Try varying the color a bit. While many scuds can be olive, many are also silvery grey or grey olive. A good friend who fishes RF a lot has one that uses a dirty pink dubbing. He calls it his 'trailer trash scud' and figures it works better than any other color. Start with some pink trilobal and add little bits of grey and other colors until it starts to look the mental image you equate with the name!
Finally, try tying 'em in different sizes. Not sure what size yours are but once a friend and I pumped a fish at the ford and were shocked to find some scuds in it that were a full 3/4" long. Don't be afraid to tie some on a size 10 or 8 hook as well as on 14s and 16s.

Thanks for the suggestions all. I will post again when I have a new batch. Yes, I debarb my flies, thank you Ron Eagle Elk. The scuds were sizes 12, 16, and the small one was an 18. I also plan on post some eggs that I tie up. My skill level is not quite at the point were I can tie small dries, but I will be working on it. Again thank you all for your suggestions.

when you tie the eggs tye them big and a tad raggish so that it gives it that kind of veiled apearence like they real thing.
