Hi all I am going to fish arround Hoodsport on the 16 17 18 of Aug. I hope to get some pinks. I have some flies for Pinks, but understand that Kings will be running at the same time. My guestion is can I get kings from the beach or do I need to rent a boat to can I get them with flies? I am going to saty at Mikes resort north of Hoodsport. This is new area for me I have fished at Toffino for silvers with a fly. Thank you for your help. Jim

in years past we've caught kings off the beach in front of the hatchery but it's been inconsistent and when the indians are netting it's impossible maybe this year will be more productive.Trying to flyfish the Skoke can be frustrating but if your there after a serious rainfall you might have some stories to tell.

One of my pet peeves: Hood Canal - not Hoods Canal, although there tend to be a lot of tweakers using those back roads.

Good, let's hear it for correct terminology. Although Vancouver did put it down on his chart as Hood's Channel, it quickly became Hood Canal. Among my pet gripes is the addition of the article, as in "the Hood Canal". There is no more historical or grammatical justification for this than there is for "the Puget Sound" or (I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't heard it) "the Snoqualmie Pass".

'The" in a description is a California term. Did you ever notice that when they describe a road trip they always say "I took the I-5 to the I-90".

But have you ever read the Murray Morgan book "Puget's Sound"?

It's the Californicator influence...they've got some folks starting to refer to our freeways as
"The 520; The 405" etc. Like, I'm just so sure. Sorry, we hi-jacked your thread.

Good for you Preston. Everyone should endeavor to devote proper respect to the English language and it is certainly important to show respect to our regional features.
Cheers,
the Les Johnson
of course the true insult to our region was changing all of the origianlly named locations, after all they were in spanish, to something more kind to the crown. how typically, ahhhh, arragant.

OK, I apologize for joining in on the shameless hijacking of your thread. My experience on Hood Canal is long but mostly with gear. I just started fly fishing about a year ago. You'll find Mike's resort to be primarily a diver's place. Beach fishing for pinks is a big deal at Hoodsport. You should be able to find some on beaches near there. I would recomend the mouth of Eagle Creek. Try to avoid the hatchery show at Hoodsport because it's combat fishing at it's very worst. If you are serious about catching a king you should bring a boat or try to rent one. Maybe you could work a deal with some of the divers based at Mike's. Check your Gazeteer and you'll find several small estuaries within a short drive of Mike's. Fish 'em!

There are Kings being caught right now in the lower Skokomish. Its crowded, mostly gear fishers, but you might be able to find some water to yourself for a while. Access is from Purdy Cutoff Rd. Read the regs. You have to fish on the S side of the river, below Hwy 101.
Don't know much about Pinks. Check the mouth of the Duckabush as well, as I heard that river gets a good run. Cool area to explore, but very exposed to the wind.
If you aren't finding any fish in the Canal and have time for the drive (about an hour and a half), you can head north to Indian Island and fish the "Cut" for searun cutts or head up to the point (Marrowstone?) and fish for salmon or cutts.
Have fun!
