This was the third weekend in a row I could make it out in Area 10, and it has been improving steadily each time. If you have been sitting around reading posts and waiting for things to heat up, now is the time to get fishing.
Friday I hit Carkeek from the beach after dinner right before slack flood. Saw a few jumpers out of range but managed about a 2 lb blackmouth right before slack. Small pink over white shock and awe right at the beach.
Sat I started at 6:00 AM from Shilshole and headed over to the Kitsap side. I forgot my fly bag and all my stuff since I took it out of the boat to fish the beach the day before, so all I had to work with was the flies I had on my boat rods from the previous week. One rod with a shreaded pink over white clouser and one rod with a sorry looking coho popper. The good news is that it did not make any difference.
I ended up 4 for 6, several LOLs and lots of follows to the boat. All silvers. I kept 2 smaller fish for the BBQ. Far and away the most consistent action this year in the salt for me. I notice that most hits on the clouser came either on the initial drop or after the first strip and pause.
Almost all the fish were in tight to the beach in less than 10 feet of water. 3 came on the clouser and then I switched to the rod with the popper and had one blast it on the first cast. No other fish to the boat on the popper, but I had a lot of follows and some huge slashing strikes at the boat, so it was pretty fun.
I was back to the boat ramp by about 8:15 AM. I didn't see any pinks, but the fish checker girl said that on Friday she checked in 5 humpies, so hopefully they are going to start moving in too!
