I'd like to buy a tube fly adaptor for my old Regal vise. Any recommendations?
Thanks,
Brian

Stone, I am not sure how much you are willing to pay but I bought the HMH tube fly adapter and I like it for now. It comes with two mandrals and the adapter. I just recently bought some tubing that is so skinny that the smallest manderal doesn't even work. I am somewhat unhappy about this as no one seems to carry the slightly larger dia tubing. I think in the future, I will be looking to get a tube fly vice, but that won't be soon. Hope this helps.

For those small tubes you can do one of two things. Use your bodkin inside of the tube to give it the extra support needed that all the mandrels does any ways. Or if the tube is plastic and short enough or with metal tubes you can just tighten to tube into tube fly adaptors from HMH without the mandrels.
Learned this trick from Anil when I bought my a HMH tube fly adaptor from his shop and is what sold me on buying it. This trick has proven to be really handy with some tubes custom made from 1/32 flared copper tubing specially made for trout flies that were even to small to put a finish nail, paperclip or small piece of wire into. Bought a bag of 50 a few years ago and till learning this trick from Anil had no idea how I was going to tie on them little things. 3/32 is normally the smallest tube made that you can get from shops.
Just goes to show you that buying from a fly shop has its advantages.

I would second Patrick’s recommendation on the H.M.H. adaptor. The standard mandrels are designed to fit the “Small cut to length” and “Large cut to length” tubing. I’m surprised that you aren’t finding these items at your local shop. If you continue to have trouble, we carry a large inventory of these tubes.
As far as the “Micro” tubing that is too small for the standard mandrels, you have several options. As Patrick mentioned, stiffer tubes will fit in the adaptor without mandrels. For tubing that is less stiff, we carry the “Micro” mandrel that can be purchased separately for $4.95. In a pinch, I have even used a standard stainless paper clip with excellent results.

I use a different tube vise, but I find that I don't need a mandrel with the micro. I actually dont' use a mandrel with any tube.

Worth every penny and marries nicely with the Regal vise.

HMH is an excellent choice. I've used one since 1995.

I have and use both the HMH tube vise and the HMH tube adapter with the machined tapered mandrels (same ones that come with the vise) and find the adapter is much more convenient to use compared to the vise. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the input. Next time I'm in the neighboorhood, I'll drop by Anil's shop and check out the HMH adaptor.
