Can anyone out there tell me the correct way to mount the wing on this pattern. I am using mallard flank and my wings do not look anything like the picture I have seen in numerous publications.
Many thx...

Cal bird had a "light" and a "dark" muddler variation. Both used dyed mallard wing and tail. I find it superior to the rolled muddler because the genius that is Cal substituted dubbing for the deer hair. Casts easier, sinks better. His is mallard tail (tied like a traditional muddler tail but with mallard) tinsel body, mallard wing, dub a small fur head. I assume the "rolled" in rolled muddler refers to cutting the bunch of fibers carefully from the stem, and rolling them between your fingers into a matchstick bunch and tying that in. That's what the pictures look like to me.

Hi Phil,

I dusted off this thread via a Google search. Any idea where I could find a picture of Cal's dubbed muddlers?

TIA,

K

Nope... I looked for one online to post with the message above and couldn't find one. Couldn't even find a freakin' mention anywhere... Sad. Cal was awesome. You might ask on the blanton board, as while Cal was from nevada his patterns have always been considered "californian". Just tie in a dyed mallard flank tail (brown, or "woodduck") a gold tinsel body for the brown a silver for the woody, a matching mallard wing (kinda like on a rolled muddler but less rolled), then dub a fur bullet shaped head, dark brown for the brown wing or tan for the woody wing... Used to kill for me on rivers like the Mokulmne... I'll look through my boxes. I must have one left over.

One of my favorite cutthroat flies. Great pattern.
