I looked these up on-line to see what they look like. It seems they offer two different models. The main difference I could see was the end of the mandrels. The less expensive model has bent ends while the other has a round tube stop. Any other differences I'm missing? Any opinions on the pro's or con's to either?
Thanks,
Brian
Hey Brian- they are great. Whatever you do, don't get a cheaper knock-off. I did and the tubes just spin so I had to get the HMH after all. I've heard people say the more expensive model is worth it but I've never used it. I think the difference is that the more $$ mandrels fit the different sized tubes better (less tube bending while tying) and the round head, rather than the bent wire, keeps your thread from sliding off the front of the tube when your finishing the head. I have the cheaper model, but I have decent mandrels from the knock-off kit.

Get the more expensive HMH adapter its worth it IMHO.
Holds the tubes much better, easy to work with, you will be turning out tubes much quicker with it.

The HMH has a small knife like ridge on the mating surface of the anvil, which bites into the tube to prevent spinning when you wrap stuff onto the tube. Attach the soft plastic hook retainer to hard tubes before you start to minimize this problem. The knock offs are smooth, so the tube spins. Avoid the cheap mandrels with the right angle for a stop, as after a few flies, the wire gets bent and it works poorly.

The more expensive version has machined mandrels that have a taper which flares out at the brass head end. This allows the tube to be clamped more solidly to the mandrel and consequently eliminates tube spinning problems even for metal tubes.
