but a friend was kind enough to give me one (650 grains if memory serves). I know these are usually used with sink tips, but has/does anyone run them with a full floating leader? (Thinking about either skating fly's or using just a long leader and weighted fly in our - present - low flow conditions.)

Fred – same for me until I was given one of the new Airflo’s. I used it with a tip up in BC then while fishing on the Deschutes I looped the dry head from my 8/9 delta on it. The system worked well and I had no problem casting the smaller flies. The only thing I did not like was the stripping. It felt like it took for ever getting set up for the next cast. After a few runs I switched back to the delta. I ended up thinking there was no advantage to the Skagit line for chucking small flies but it was very nice in BC for fishing heads and big flies.

Hey Fred,
I use my WC floating head on my skagit line with floating leader and it works great. I think that the thing to remeber is that you want to keep the 3 to 3.5 line/rod ratio. Yes, there is a lot more stripping of the line but it still works.

Good luck,

Steve S

Rio is actually making a floating head that you attach to the Skagit for floating and greased lines applications. You can see it here:

yeah, I've got a good friend who fishes his skagit set up on the deschutes with the floating tip. I've been fishing an Airflow Delta 7/8 on my new 6/7/8 solstice. It's basically more pleasurable skagit fishing as the head is 55 ft (by no means long), and I really like it. Check out some of ed ward's (riveraddict) posts on the subject on spey pages. I mean obviously he's a little biased, but he seems to get it done.

Fred, I'm using a Rio 650 skagit on my Sage 9141 and during late spring and fall, I've just switched out the sink tips for the floating line. I've been using the Skagit line for about a year and a half - overall a pretty decent line, especially usefull for what it was designed for. Given that you're used to the Vision scando head, you won't find too much difference overall. On the dry line, I've been using about a 14 foot leader.

have fun!

We've got another thread going on loop vs nail knots, etc. Never lost a head that I can recall .... till yesterday! Hung up and off goes the new skagit head and tip down the Rogue River. Few minutes later hang up a extra fast sinking poly leader ...... you guessed it ... that one's gone too.bawling:

Hey Steve,

When you say just switch out the sink tip for the floater, are you referring to just adding the windcutter floater to the skagit?

Thanks,

Yes, I purchased a skagit with the loop system and purchased an additional equivalent "windcutter" floating tip (10/11/12) if memory serves me right with that line.

i have a sage 7136 that i have been using a 450 skagit on and it casts pretty nicely with a 7/8 skagit tip, no cheater, and about a 12-14 foot leader. i want to try one of the new advanced flight lines.
