View Full Version : Long Pheasant Tail Material

I have come across an interesting Steelhead pattern. The body looks like it is made out of Pheasant tail. It is tied on an Alec jackson hook. A normal Pheasant tail chunk dosen't cut it. I would have to tie in about 3. I tried and it is a pain!!! Is there an Longer alternative Material.
I have some Brown Rhea, but I am reluctant to use it until I have too.

Can you use any of the ice chenilles or estaz chenilles to achieve a similar effect?? Perhaps olive staz metalllique or regular ice.

Look for a long golden pheasant tail feather. The fibers are longer and depending on the hook size the longer fibers should make it (for sure on 3 and 5). Tie the fibers in tip first using 6 to 10 fibers. There are a number of different flies that call for PT bodies. It’s a great earthy look.

This fly is tied on a 3. I will take a look for some golden pheasant. I have one, but it is lacking a tail for some reason. I tied a few with peacock instead and they look really good.

It's missing the tail because the tail is worth more than the skin... Not cheap for the good stuff...

Pheasant tail wrapped over a Alec Jackson spey hook size 3. A copper rib over the top of the pheasant. A Guinea fowl Feather tied in and wrapped up front. Simple and it looks good.

well i dont have any spey hooks but i may try to tie one up on a normal hook.
